Dog Commands - Learn new Dog Commands
When teaching your dog new commands, one of the most important Dog Commands they know is Sit and Stay. The younger your dog is the better it is for them to learn the commands that you are teaching them, however puppies are the hardest since they have shorter attention spans. It is however very important throughout the training process that you remain cool and use positive reinforcement while teaching your dog. You will also want to be in a quiet area free from distractions such as cars, other people within the immediate area, etc.
When training your dog you will first want to give the dog a treat, such as a dry dog food treat. It is better to train a dog right before feeding time, so this way they will do as you ask in order to get a treat as they will be more focused. Over time you will want to get them away from treats after they have mastered sit and stay and only respond to your voice commands.
It is best to have train your dog to sit and stay to your left hand side. Once you get the dog sitting, put your hand over the top of his nose and firmly use your voice to tell him to “Stay”. Do not repeat your commands over and over as this will confuse the dog. Only use the command and gesture once as the dog first gets into a sitting position. At first they will do this for a few seconds at most. Reward them by giving them a dry dog food treat. Keep repeating the process with your dog by making them stay in the sitting position for a few seconds longer each time using your authoritative voice for “Stay” and hand for control. Remember to keep rewarding them accordingly and issue your hand control and voice command only once per sitting attempt.
After they can stay for a few long periods (i.e. 30 seconds to a minute) by your side, attempt moving away one step at a time until you can get a few feet away and control your dog.
Keep your training sessions short. I have found using 5-15 minutes per day in the beginning works best depending on how the attention span of your dog is that day. Also play with your dog for a little time after each training period to reward their learning efforts.
